A few years ago I was asked to view a woodlot from an owner in NY State. Since he had moved away from the island a number of years ago, he wasn't aware how competitive the market had become for timber. He was offered $15,000 for his standing timber but he wasn't sure if it was a good offer and asked us to cruise the land to give him some ideas of what could be done with the woodlot.

We cruised the property and found mature stand of softwood which could be harvested with some good quality trees prime for sawlogs and studwood. Upon consulting with the owner, we searched to find him a better price since his timber was worth more. He received an offer two days later of $24,000.
